Skills Support for the Workforce partner Tower Hamlets College was approached by the North East London Local Pharmacy Committee (NELLPC) in 2013 to provide training for their members, enabling them to be ‘healthy living champions’ and contribute to meeting their NHS and Health and Wellbeing Board contractual requirements to provide better health outcomes for local patients.
The committee, which represents all pharmacies in the London boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest, identified an urgent need for training as pharmacy staff now have new responsibilities to protect and improve health and wellbeing as part of new changes introduced into the NHS delivery model.
The training provided by Tower Hamlets College supports the pharmacy staff in tackling health issues in their communities such as smoking, sexual health, alcohol and drug misuse and obesity.
Thanks to the funding from Skills Support for the Workforce, Tower Hamlets College has run two successful programmes with pharmacies across east London. 100 pharmacy staff have now successfully achieved Level 2 Awards in Understanding Health Improvement, a qualification awarded by the Royal Society of Public Health.
The local pharmacies have been delighted with the outcomes their staff have achieved to date, and are looking forward to further Skills Support for the Workforce training to help to improve their business outcomes.
